In light of the fact that I apparently have nothing of use to write about this week, I decided to take a page out of Dip’s book and give you 5 RIDICULOUSLY SWEET movies that you’ve likely never had the good fortune of seeing.  Every one of these movies is 100% worthy of purchase based entirely on my recommendation.  They are all that good. 

1. Serenity

Serenity dominates

Serenity is easily the best “surprise” sci-fi movie of the last 10 years.  It didn’t have the budget a Star Wars or a Star Trek, but it managed to overcome that with a fantastic story that OBLITERATES just about anything from either.  The special effects might not be first rate, but they are still solid.  The movie is based on the television series “Firefly” (also a 5 star HUGE time recommendation from me) and the top notch characters translate brilliantly to the big screen.  If you like sci-fi even a little bit, go buy this movie.  NOW.

2. Fallen

Fallen is a psychological supernatural thriller starring Denzel Washington.  The basic premise is that there are “demons” that can inhabit human beings and control them, transferring from person to person by touch.  Since they are so evil the generally seek to destroy the life of the person they inhabit and then move on to their next victim.  Well, this demon chooses to destroy the life of Denzel Washington by inhabiting his friends and family and by framing him for a series of crimes.  Yes, I understand how terrible this movie sounds.  Buy it anyway.  The story is absolutely brilliant, the plot is worked out in great detail, and the ending is an incredible twist that you’ll never see coming. 

3. Equilibrium

Mindless action movies rock, and Equilibrium might be the king of them all.  It came out right after the Matrix, and its basic goal was to one-up it with every action scene.  The plot is not overly complex, but much of it is similar to Big Brother from Orson Wells’ 1984.  The overly involved government attempts to squash any individuality of its citizens.  Christian Bale stars as an ultra-cop who can dominate just about anyone in an asskicking contest.  The action scenes are as good as any movie I’ve ever seen.  It’s like True Lies on crack.    

4. Shade

Shade is one of the best gambling movies ever made.  There’s lots of poker, and lots of people swindling each other.  Rocky Balboa shows up at the end, supposedly as “The Dean”, widely considered an unbeatable card player.  The unintentional comedy factor in this is so high it’s insane.  ROCKY CAN’T PLAY CARDS!!  Either way, it’s got an incredible twist at the end that any movie lover can enjoy.

5. Poolhall Junkies

Last but certainly not least is Poolhall Junkies.  Poolhall Junkies is basically the Rounders of the pool world.  Both stars have quit the game because of an overbearing girlfriend even though they were potential superstars.  Both are pulled back into it in order to repay the debts of their idiot friends (In this case, his idiot brother).  Mars Callahan wrote, directed, and starred in this extremely original and well thought out film.  The pool scenes are top notch and the story is exhilarating.  Check it out.  Now.
