Does anyone even remember the great Ludwig Van Beethoven?
You know, the 19th century virtuoso pianist who began to go deaf in his twenties, yet still literally orchestrated the transition from musical classicism to romanticism.
Here we today almost two hundred years after his death and we’re listening to what…Hillary Duff?
Are you kidding me?
Just read the lyrics to this song, it’s called Wake Up.
I put my makeup on a Saturday night
I try and make it happen
Try to make it all right
I know I make mistakes
I'm living life day to day
It's never really easy but it's ok
In this song, you have your synthesized rhythm machine playing underneath what sounds like high pitched cartoon music. Hillary Duff then moans out the above lyrics like a pre-teen complaining that her purse is out of style. After hearing one verse of this song, you will be looking for the nearest blunt object to smash against your forehead.
What do these lyrics even mean? What, Hillary Duff, are you trying to make right by cleaning yourself up? How are you living life day to day? How is it never easy?
The Hard Knock Life
You are a twenty year old, bombshell, actress, singer, songwriter, fashion designer, and film producer. You have three platinum albums, you’ve sold over thirteen million copies, and you’ve launched your own obnoxious, teeny-bopper clothing line.
So what about your life is “never easy,” you stale, plastic, uninteresting, abomination of a toilet rug. You are the “Scrappy Doo” of the music industry and I hope you go bankrupt.
The fact of the matter is over the centuries we have transitioned from absolute musical dominance to overwhelming mediocrity, at best.
In order to avoid dissecting every genre of music, I think it is fair to say we were still okay in the twentieth century. Individuals such as George Gershwin and Claude Debussy were prominent figures in the early 1900’s and were also considered to be notable influences to future important figures in jazz.
In 1959, the Sound of Music opened on Broadway.
The Hills were alive
Even in the early 1960’s, though the Beatles started to make pop culture music sound like faggish love ballads--people loved it. My parents loved it and you know what, I kind of like it too. It was music. Paul McCartney is actually a very talented musician.
Then in the 1970’s, the radio proudly promoted the talent of Billy Joel and Elton John. I’m not saying they were Johann Bach and Johann Brahms, but as far as modern day pianists are concerned, they are probably the closest. In my opinion, they might be two of the most talented musicians I have ever heard.
I’m not even beginning to scratch the surface of talent that has surfaced in the last one hundred years. That said, what do we have to show for it today? Who’s talented in the 21st century?
Do kids even know how to play instruments or are they all on Xbox live yelling at me for stealing their sniper rifles?
Dont wanna be an American Idiot
One of the most popular shows on television these days is American Idol. Have you heard of it? It’s the show where we take talented singers and force them to release generic albums that take advantage of nothing but their newfound first impression-based popularity.
You know the song “Since You’ve Been Gone” has been released seven times prior to when American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson wailed it in 2004? Not the same song, but same title. That’s originality at its finest.
Apparently it was originally written for Hillary Duff but she wasn’t talented enough to sing it, literally.
Am I the only one that thinks this is pathetic?
Even Green Day is calling us idiots, and their lead singer is so drugged up he can barely spell redundant.
This guys is a role model now
Yet American Idol returned for its seventh season this January, and it continues to be one of the most popular shows on television. It just recently produced another winner who will now use his new found celebrity status to promote a hackneyed album, which will probably get nominated for a Grammy. As a country we seem to celebrate underachievement, which is why we might never again hear a piece of music that the enthusiast piano player can’t learn in three days.
Think about the genres that are popular today. The rockers don’t care about rhythm, the rappers don’t care about key changes, R&B/soul doesn’t know what it cares about, the punks don’t understand time signature, and everyone else is just writing music to explain why they are so depressed. Somewhere over the years, the true mastery of music went out of style.
In fact, aside from the newer musical attempts on Broadway, there exists only one genre of music where some of the artists still exhibit a counterintuitive mastery of musical perception. Unfortunately, the way it is expressed, half the people in the world refuse to even listen to it.
And people make fun of me for listening to Country music. Jokes on you. At least it’s still music.
Don’t be discouraged though, there are still musical masterpieces out there. Just most of us are looking to the mainstream. We’re looking in all the wrong places.

You sound like all the damn ignorant people that line up to watch American Idol.
And Bluegrass to me gets grouped under country. So does "the Devil Went Down to Georgia."
In fact, right now, Country is probably the genre with the most talented artists.

Love it. Sorry to all, but I agree with this guy. I take music seriously, and most people I've known hate this about me. Here she goes again, on her kick about why people should demand a little quality to whatever it is the media is feeding them. Most people either don't give a **** what kind of crap is put into their minds, or they're just not aware of what quality is. I write songs, poetry, fiction...I happen to know what's crap and what isn't. The Hillary Duff thing, and all the other hundreds just like her - daddies girls with no talent who made it because they have a certain look when there are so many other really talented women out there who get nowhere because they don't "fit the jacket." (Reference to Johnny Bravo, Brady Bunch). Most don't even write their own songs. Trash trash, trash......people don't know or care anymore. And I think because greed so consumes us, that naturally, "music" has devolved into what it is, merely who looks good in a video and can they market the package...and since most people don't have the ability to judge what's good, they can only go by the choices out there, so they THINK it's good, when it's like, vomit. Bluegrass is awesome. The old country was awesome. It was founded by people who had a story to tell, who lived through hard times, who had seen death and still held onto their faith. A lot of today's country is sung by little girls who have no clue what that is about. Daddy got me here, so listen up, fellas. Idiots!!! What's with that Shania thing? Is she so unimaginative that she can't think of anything else to sing about besides being a woman? It's like manufacturing a product and then cutting your market in half by putting on the label, "For Women Only" when really, you could have sold it to EVERYONE. So many, many, many things to sing about....and people don't frigging know this. Scary stuff.
