Do any of you even know where the Bermuda Triangle is?
I admit my first answer was, “I don’t know, somewhere near Bermuda.”
Do you know where Thailand is?
Do you know where Bangladesh is?
Do you know what Nunavut means?
Okay, maybe these questions are too worldly. Let’s get back to the United States.
Do you know where Cape Cod is?
Martha’s Vinyard?
Nebraska?
Do you even CARE?
The answer is probably not. Americans truly don’t care. We don’t understand the world around us and we don’t care. I swear that if I took a blank map, walked into the conference room across the hall and pointed to Nova Scotia, maybe one of ten people would identify it correctly.
For twenty-five years of my life, Canada has been one of the most irrelevant entities in the entire universe. No offense to the Canadians, but yesterday I couldn’t distinguish British Columbia from Alberta, Ontario from Quebec, or even that Nunavut is actually a territory in Canada. For the love of Jose Guillen, I was stunned to realize that a place called Saskatchewan existed before yesterday morning. All I have known about Canada for my entire life can be summed up in one word--hockey.
To be completely honest, I don’t consider myself as ignorant as you are currently judging me to be. In fact, my ability to look things up once I realize I am clueless makes me unique. I mean, I can’t help being part of the highly intellectual culture that is North Jersey. The area is polluted with New York Giants fans, what do you expect?
Just think about the simple knowledge that is fading in the United States today. Can you name the capitals of all 50 states? You know there are 50 right?
The other day I was talking to my friend Tom Brennan over lunch. He agrees that a general knowledge of basic geography has become completely unimportant in the world today.
My dad called the New York Transportation Authority to ask if the State of Maine driving permit was legal to use in New York State. The woman he talked to didn't know where Maine was and then asked him "is that even part of the United States?"
Now I understand New York Giants fans are complete idiots, but this is taking that concept to a whole new level.
 Duh......Pey-ton
To me it is like we are living in this bubble, created by the media, that blurs all the lines between reality and hearsay. I’ve reached the point where I can’t stand watching the news, because it is almost impossible for me to distinguish between fact and opinion. That and I’m sick of hearing about fires and shootings. I wonder how many other people feel the same way.
So it should come to no surprise that I had no idea where Thailand is located. I was watching a movie with my lovely girlfriend last weekend, (American Gangster) and Denzel Washington passes through Thailand to procure some authentic Heroin. “Cut out the middle man” was one of the central themes of the movie.
I thought Thailand was in China. Why? Because my only connection to Thailand is that I remember the airplane from Street Fighter II flying to what appeared to be China to fight Sagat--the only frustrating character I could not beat on one quarter in the entire game. I remember the plane landing on the flag and hearing the arcadey voice announce, “Thailand.”
 My world map growing up
This horrible realization prompted me to look up several places in Asia. I wanted to know exactly where Hong Kong was located, and for some reason I rediscovered Bangladesh. My search eventually led me to the following website.
(I still don’t know where Brunei is)
I felt like it was kind of pathetic how little I remembered from fifth grade geography class. Then I wondered how many people would even click the link I provided. I wonder if the few people that read this rant will even care enough to develop a minimal understanding of the world beyond what we see on television. The internet is such a useful tool, but how do we use it?
Yesterday on Yahoo’s main page was an article describing a remark that social abomination, Jewel, made that reminded someone of something Paula Abdul would say.
What?
How many people clicked that? Why do people even care about this crap? If you didn’t hear the gossip already, make sure you watch the news tonight because it will probably be reported several times on several different stations.
Today I learned that the most Northern point in the United States is International Falls, Minnesota. I thought that was interesting. I would have guessed Maine or Seattle, Washington.
Washington State.
No, not the capital.
We live in the age of text messaging, instant messenger, and YouTube. American Idol is one of the most popular shows on television. I have to run spell check ten times for this very article you’re reading because my brain is rotting from text messaging and stupid typing acronyms. People are getting dumber by the second. How we eat, drink, sleep, read, relax, exercise, and apparently vote, are all being influenced by the media. We don’t have minds of our own. The WWE is just as, if not more popular than NASA. Commercials don’t even try anymore during the Super Bowl. Neither do our movies nor our music artists. You know why?
….is going out to idiot America.
