Four TV Shows You Should Watch |

If I had known 5 years ago I would be reduced to watching a cooking reality tv show… I may have puked. Sure, they are interesting but doesn’t the formula get a little boring… put some talented people together, cause some drama and have some rude/annoying hosts.
What the hell is happening? Lindsay Lohan’s mom has a reality show, Denise Richards has a reality show, hell even Hulk Hogan’s daughter has a reality show. I won’t even get into the fact that that no talent slut Kim Kardashian has a show too. I’m sure all of you have similar examples of ridiculous TV. Look, I am sure you all have some pretty eventful lives, and don't need to watch a myraid of bimbos and morons on TV. You want some entertainment from some real characters, go stand on broad street near city hall and just observe "Reality" around you.
I know about these shows because Cable TV doesn’t allow me to just pay for the channels I want. Honestly, I have no need for E! network. I really don’t need 14 do it yourself channels. Alas, to get the channels I do want, I have to take in the garbage with it.
I’m going to give you all four TV shows, which are just downright amazing. These are not unpopular shows, but I can guess with fairly high confidence that you haven’t seen all four. I won’t mention LOST, House MD, or any of the other decent shows on network TV. What I want to mention, are some shows that play on cable channels, and premium channels.
I implore you, instead of watching the crap that’s rampant on TV these days, (this isn’t to say there aren’t good shows, but the good ones are a HEAVY minority, and these are tried and true by me… which is a pretty good authority on these things) go rent these shows and actually begin to enjoy watching TV again.
Let’s begin with The Shield – FX (imdb)
Now, I don’t know how many of you remember my man Michael Chiklis playing “The Commish” years ago on network TV. When I was growing up, my mom loved that show and I watched it with her, and he was a very likeable guy.
Nice commish, trying to live the family life, very likeable.
Well, Michael has had a transformation. He is now a hard-ass cop named Detective Vic Mackey. He’s a cop with loose morals, but really wants to clean up the streets. You don’t have to like him in the show, but you find yourself rooting for him. The show is filled with a subtlety that is rare these days, and there are so many things going on at once, that you’re glued to the tv.
Not so nice cop, trying to live the family life, hard to like, but you can’t help it.
This series is in its 7th season, which will be it’s last. So far, it hasn’t lost any of it’s luster, and the show has no rules, the writers will do whatever they want to make the show better, and keep it fresh.
Look… regardless of what you may think, like “it’s just another cop show,” or anything like that… just give it a shot. Do you really think you’re missing much by skipping the crap you watch on a normal basis? Buy the first season, or just go rent it from blockbuster or Netflix. Do yourself a favor, and stop your brain from atrophying by watching the garbage that’s on TV now.
Now, I'm gonna talk about a show that had two seasons so far, on Showtime.
Sleeper Cell - Showtime (imdb)
Does this look like a terrorist cell to you?
Sleeper cell is a show about a an FBI agent played by Michael Ealy, who goes underground into a terrorist cell running in America. This show is somewhat similar to 24, yet strangely different. The main character is not as Bad Ass as Jack Bauer, but he is equally captivating.
This show really does a good job of showing that terrorists are not simply Muslims running around with large beards and turbans. Terrorists are not morons living in caves playing with arcane weapons and dated technology. It does a fantastic job of showing that Muslims are not terrorists, infact, the vast majority are peaceful who are as disgusted with terrorists as everyone else.
The show is very unsettling. Michael Ealy is an absolute stud in this show and really does an amazing job of selling his character, Darwyn Al-Sayeed. The main terrorist, Farik (Oded Fehr) is equally well played; you will remember him as the crazy guy from the Mummy. Good times.
You want a fantastic show that really keeps you on the edge of your seat, this is the show for you. Go rent season 1, watch it and tell me that you aren’t anxious to watch season 2.
Showtime did an AMAZING job on this show.
Now, lets keep going on showtime and discuss another fantastic show, Weeds.
Weeds - Showtime (imdb)
Weeds is a show about a lady, Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker), who just lost her husband. In order to maintain her lifestyle in a Posh Suburb, she resorts to selling Weed. She is joined by her brother in Law, Silias Botwin (Hunter Parish) who is ridiculously funny in the show. He’s a pothead that just goes with the flow and really helps her deal with the pressures of the life she’s put herself in.
Her accountant, to helps her launder the money is a pothead as well, and is played by non other than Kevin Nealon. He is AWESOME in this show, and you find yourself laughing your ass off every time he’s on screen.
This show is filled with characters that are funny, loveable and all played really well. The casting is fantastic but the writing is even better. The show doesn’t get stale, the story progresses well and you find yourself rooting for this single mom.
This is a great show that is filled with Comedy, but also had some drama in there to keep everyone happy.
Now I'm going to end this with one of my favorite shows of all time. This is a show that is 5 seasons long, which just had its series finale.
The Wire – HBO (imdb)
 McNulty is Awesome
This show just ended and I must say, it was AMAZING. David Simon, who created this show road mapped it for 5 years, and even after its absolutely ridiculous amount of praise, he stuck to his plan and ended the show.
This show is written so well, acted to such perfection by actors you probably have never heard of, and is told from so many points of view that you find yourself stunned.
This is a show about a few homicide detectives in Inner City Baltimore. Detective Jimmy McNulty (Dominic West) and Detective Bunk Moreland (Wendell Pierse) are the main homicide detectives in the beginning. Both have issues. Both are alcoholics who love their job, and can’t do anything else. Both are flawed, yet you love them both.
The show has it all, it has a lesbian narcotic detective, a crackhead with incredible charisma, crooked politicians and police, hardcore drug dealers, and everything in between. You have a homosexual vigilante to steals from drug dealers to survive who also is absurdly charming. You have crooked lawyers and strippers.
There are so many characters, yet none are neglected. They are all developed just enough to get the point across, some are killed, some are arrested, and some are just surviving.
Season one deals with a drug dealer Avon Barksdale, that basically runs a huge empire on the west side of Baltimore, and no one knows. No one but McNulty, who of course, has to solve the crime, but can’t make the case to any of the brass to really go after this guy.
He leverages a friendship with a judge to put some pressure on the police department and is finally given some help to handle this problem. The team is led by a competent lieutenant, but half of the team are scrubs. (Think of cable TV, you gotta take the garbage with the good). They basically start tapping phone lines and get a wire going, to help build a case.
This team is constantly facing pressure to bring in lower level criminals, instead of building a case to bring down the head guy. They are dealing with politics, and it seems like their biggest enemies are the higher ups in the police department.
This show keeps you CONSUMED for hours. I guarantee, if you get season 1 and give it a chance, you can’t watch just one episode, and at the end of it, you will want Season 2, then 3, 4 and 5.
Like The Shield, this show is a cop show, but it is NOT GENERIC. It deals with problems that I never thought about, and really does a great job of showing some of the real troubles plaguing some inner city police departments.
Is this show accurate? I have no idea, but it is it captivating.
Go watch it, Paris Hilton can wait.
