I’ve written about some recent TV Shows (click)that are awesome, and severalmovies (click) that you probably haven’t seen.
Now I'm gonna go through some Video Games, Books and Music that have renewed my faith.
Videogames
In video games, having finished GTA IV, I wanted to find some games to play that would keep me as entertained as GTA IV did, as such, I reverted to an old favorite.
Buy this game, on the Xbox or Playstation.
Castlevania is a game that was very popular on the original SNES series, following a vampire hunter on his quest to destroy Dracula. In college, I was completely enthralled with Castlevania – Symphony of the Night for the Playstation. It was just awesome. In a day and age of first person shooters, and absurldly long and boring Role Playing Games, Symphony of the night was like a breath of fresh air. It was a two dimensional action game, and it kept my mind occupied.
Anyway, I downloaded Symphony of the Night for the XBOX 360 (Live arcade, its like 10 bucks, get it), and it sat there idle because I was owning up Crackdown then GTA IV. Well I cracked that moffaka open this week, and it’s every bit as awesome as I remember.
In addition, I was playing Castlevania – Dawn of Sorrow for the Nintendo DS. Since I’ve been traveling a lot, this game really kept me occupied on airplanes. It was just as much fun as Symphony of the night, with some interesting new angles. I absolutely love this game… unfortunately I beat it and had a void on the DS.
What to do?
I bought Castlevania – Portrait of Ruin. Holy crap, this game is just as much fun, and much bigger. For added fun, ther are two characters that work together at points to beat some pretty simple puzzles and own up some goth emo morons (how cool would it be if we could replace the “monsters” in these games with emo douchebags?)
Anyway, I'm still in the process of beating Symphony of the Night and I have my DS ready to rock with Portrait of Ruin.
Castlevania, I thank you, and hate you, for causing me to be a fiend for videogames once again. There was a time when I would play video games occasionally. Now, it’s the first thing I want to do if I have free time.
Books
The first book I ever read cover to cover, was Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, and this was in 2000. That’s right folks, I never finished a book before that. All through high-school, my summer reading essays were based on cliffs notes, movies when available and my ridiculous talent of spinning BS. Sure, my when 29 year old brother handed me the book (when I was 19), I looked like at him and laughed. Was he seriously telling me this book was amazing, or did he hope to get me to read with something designed for children.
Well, whatever it was, it worked.
After Harry Potter 1-4 was completed, I had a void to fill, and needed to read. I read Orson Scott Card’s Ender series as a recommendation from a friend, and loved it. I read Lord of the Rings, then the Silmarillion. Then I read Asimov’s foundation series. At my peak, I was reading 80-120 pages a night, instead of TV I was reading before bed.
In the last few months, my reading had been trailing off. I finished all the Harry Potters, I read CS Lewis, I finished Robert Jordan’s absurdly long and drawn out wheel of time. I read a bunch of Koontz books, and the absolutely stunning Dark Tower Series from Stephen King.
I had a void, and I was reading mediocre books. This all came to an end when a friend told me to read the Dresden Series from Jim Butcher. This is a series of books about a Wizard (Harry Dresden) practicing out in the open. Naturally, people don’t believe him, but he doesn’t care. He’s a good character and written very well. In addition, he’s a real man, which means he doesn’t spend his days off trimming his cuticles and having his eyebrows waxed. Guys, metro-sexual is a synonym for douche bag, but that’s a whole different rant. Maybe I just like wizards named Harry. I urge you, if you like sci-fi, go pick up the first Dresden Book (Called Storm Front by Jim Butcher), and read it. You won’t be disappointed.
Music
I’m gonna be talking about hiphop here. Before you go off about how Rap is CRAP and all that garbage, this is not a debate about the genre of music, but more the quality of it. The debate about hiphop vs everything else can wait for another rant.
Music has really let me down in the past few years. First, one of my favorite artists, Mos Def, released two absolutely garbage albums. Albums I was so happy to go pick up, were just such garbage that I gave them away. The same man who put out “Black on Both Sides”. The same man who worked with Talib Kweli in what is one of the best collobarations of hiphop ever, in “Black Star”. This man after, almost a decade, puts out “A New Danger” and “Tru3 Magic.” I’ll break it to you gently; there was no Magic, true or otherwise.
Then, The Roots put out some absolutely garbage albums. They have had some absolutely AMAZING albums in their catalog. There are very few albums that come out that you can play cover to cover. The Roots have several. Their last two were less than spectacular. They had a few good hits, but over all, the albums as a whole were crap.
Luckily, I have some really good music to share with you, and some that should be coming out that should be awesome.
Common: Common’s last two albums have been fantastic, go get them immediately. They are called Finding Forever and Be.
Guru: Guru is one of the geniuses from Gang Starr. About a year ago, he released
“Jazzmatazz Volume 4”, which is a fusion of hiphop with Jazz. This is an album I listened to cover to cover, with a smile on my face. This is the album that really made me think that decent hiphop isn’t dead.
Rakim: That’s right folks. Rakim. I don’t know how many of you know who Rakim is, but if you don’t and you listen to this genre, you should learn. This is the Godfather of hiphop. This is the man who helped build it, and he’s releasing a new album.
His newest album isn’t out yet, but a few songs are out there and they are amazing. Here is a snippet:
So, there you have it, a list of games, books and music that has renewed my faith. I’ll have some top five lists coming in the future.
