The sports world has been shocked, stunned, blown away or whatever other word you can think of to describe the ridiculousness that happened last night.  The New York Giants just defeated maybe the greatest team of all time in Super Bowl XLII.  As a sports fan, I am offended, appalled, and thoroughly disgusted that THIS was the culmination of one of the greatest seasons of all time. 

First and foremost, let me mention the biggest atrocity of this game.  Eli Manning was named the Super Bowl MVP.  SUPER BOWL MVP!  He just received one of the greatest honors in all of sports, in spite of the fact that New York’s absolutely fantastic defense was the ONLY reason that they were even CLOSE.  Eli led the Giants to a grand total of THREE points in the first 3 quarters.  In fact, Eli threw 3 or 4 absolute PRAYERS on the last drive, 2 of which hit New England defenders IN THE HANDS, but they were unable to come up with the interceptions.  One of the balls was just launched into the sky and if not for David Tyree leaping into a pack of defenders and making one of the greatest clutch catches in the history of the NFL, New England would have won.

Another pass hit Asante Samuels in the hands with NO ONE near him, and he couldn’t come up with the catch.  Now, Eli is Super Bowl MVP and no one 10 years from now will remember all of the terrible plays that he made.  They’ll just remember the final play, with the winning touchdown falling into the arms of a wide open Plaxico Burress.  I’m going to have to listen FOREVER about how this guy is a hero, a Super Bowl LEGEND.  I think I’m going to be sick.

I feel cheated as a fan.  I should have watched the culmination of the greatest season of all time ending with a victory coronation.  Instead, I now have to listen to and read endless stories about one of the most amazing upsets in the history of sports.  I have to listen about how Eli Manning led the Giants to an incredible come from behind win in the 4th quarter to ruin the undefeated Patriots shot at perfection.  The Patriots choked so thoroughly that they should be erased from the record books forever
(but that’s a topic for another rant entirely).  Every football fan that isn’t a Giants fan just missed an opportunity to witness history, and instead was treated to a victory by one of the worst teams to ever be crowned champion in the history of the NFL.     

Not only that, but I can’t even degrade what the Giants did the way I would certainly like to.  Their defense played OUTSTANDING.  They won 3 road playoff games in a row just to get here, and then upset the first undefeated Super Bowl competitor in over 30 years (1972 Miami Dolphins).  Immediately following the game, I got a call from one of my best friends who lives in the Bronx.  It was so crazy there that I could barely hear a word he said.  In spite of the fact that it tore at every fiber of my being to do so, I tried to be a man and offered him the most sincere congratulations I could and suggested that he party the entire night.  The worst part about it is that I MEANT it.  The Giants had earned my respect.  I think the fact that I don’t like the Patriots either was the only reason I didn’t puke my brains out. 

I work in upstate New York and I’m dreading the next few weeks at the office.  Seeing the smiling faces of all the Giants fans is going to be an absolutely gut wrenching reminder of the complete and utter failure of a Patriots team that should have been remembered forever as an all time great.  Instead the Patriots are going to be remembered for turning TERRIBLE Eli Manning into a football legend and for crushing the spirits and memories of football fans around the nation. 

And with that, I’d like toast the New York Giants for all that they have done for me and for all sports fans:  “Here’s to you, New York Football Giants, for the way you completely DECIMATED any work related enjoyment I might have over the next few months, for the way you RUINED an absolutely historic NFL season, and for the way you turned a DREADFUL Eli Manning into a Super Bowl hero.  May your championship success follow with 10 LONG years in the cellar for the UNBEARABLE pain you have caused sports fans around the nation.”
