Super Mario 3 is the greatest platformer of all time.  Period.  Nothing else even comes close.  Sonic was outstanding, Crash Bandicoot had its moment in the sun, and Donkey Kong Country brought graphics to a new level, but none of them could match the sheer perfection achieved by Super Mario Bros. 3.

Mario 3 was one of the first video games to REALLY be hyped even before it came out.  The day it came out was an EVENT, and as soon as people got the chance to play it, it blew up like no other game before it or since.  You think Halo 3 was big?  Halo 3 was WEAKSAUCE compared to Mario 3.  Mario 3 sold EIGHTEEN MILLION COPIES.  It’s far and away the best selling video game of all time (not counting those that shipped with consoles).  To put things in perspective, Halo 3 has sold roughly 8 million copies, LESS THAN HALF of what Mario 3 sold.

The sheer sense of joy the first time you got the raccoon suit was overwhelming.  Taking a running leap and flying into the sky made you feel like you could go anywhere and do anything.

Racoon Suit was amazing

Mario 3 managed to take all of the fantastic powers from the original Mario and expand on them in fantastic new ways.

Hammer Bros Mario DOMINATES!

There was always something PHENOMENAL about turning into Statue Mario and being completely INDESTRUCTIBLE.  Using the Frog Suit to circumvent thousands of electric jellyfish, AMAZING.  Remember the Hammer Brothers that TORMENTED you in the original Mario, now you could BECOME one yourself, and become the tormentor.  In addition to all of these brilliant moves, there was the OWNAGE that was the shoe.  The shoe is still to this day, the GREATEST power up in video game history.

OMG!!!! THE SHOE!!!!

The overall amount of variety in the game was unlike anything ever seen in the genre before.  The worlds varied from grasslands to deserts, ice worlds to sky worlds, ocean seas to overgrown greenhouses.  Of course, all of this brilliance culminated in the spectacular BIG WORLD, where Mario was shrunk to the size of an ant, and all of the enemies towered over him.

HUGE GOOMBAS!!

In addition to the level variety, there was also a huge amount of options in the overworld.  Players could play memory card games, enter mushroom houses for power ups, and take on a large assortment of hammer brothers.

The level of secrets was also enormous for a game of that time.  There were hidden warp whistles to hasten you to the end of the game.

For those of you who never found the whistles

There were airships to protect the Koopa Kid bosses.  There were random coin ships which would appear from time to time to shower you with extra lives.  The number of hidden 1-up mushrooms is absolutely staggering.  For those of you who had the skills, white mushroom houses rewarded outstanding play with extra special power ups  (Including P-wings for infinite flight, just AWESOME!).

Super Mario 3 blew away all other platformers.  Its perfect control still makes the game just as fun as the first time I played it.  It even spawned a cult following among video game speed runners, who attempted to set world records for shortest play time.

To put it simply, the game is so awesome, it even made a THE WIZARD into a cult classic.

Holy crap did this SUCK!

Such a spectacular piece of acknowledgment.

And you had to throw the Wizard in at the end.

For shame.
