These guys are tournament favorites? Read more to find out what else happened at Jose Canseco's pool party.
Sometimes you just need to ask why….
Why isn't this kid scared?
WHY is North Carolina ranked #1?
Happy Weaksauce Wednesday everyone!Guess who this week’s winner is!
So I’m watching Sportscenter Monday night, and the two
analysts are discussing the NCAA College Basketball tournament. It doesn’t take them long to mention North Carolina, because
they were recently ranked number one in the nation.Long story short, at the end of the
conversation they both agreed that North
Carolina would win the tournament.Yes you heard that right.
There are two immediate things wrong with this.
One, Carolina
hasn’t even played the ACC tournament yet, so these two invalids aren’t premising their assessment on a recent strong tournament performance.
Two, the Tarheels are fresh off a despicable performance
against BostonCollege, where their defense was so bad
that all five starters got pulled at the start of the second half.
So, I’m not really sure where this nonsensical, assnine,
Tarheel love is coming from.
Everyone Loves UNC!
In fact, when searching for pictures for this article, for
hours I could not find ONE PICTURE that portrays North Carolina in a negative way.Are you kidding me?When did the Tarheels become America’s
team?I can’t think of a more
undeserving candidate even if the Miami Dolphins fell through my roof.Duke fans…..where
are you?
Actually, on that note I need to list a few facts before I
go any further:
Fact 1 -I am not a
fan of DukeUniversity.
Fact 2 -I did not
hate North Carolina
last year or any other years before this one.
That said, I will now describe to you in full why I despise
the North Carolina Tarheels.I have
chosen to organize my disgust into six categorizes.
Part One - I hate UNC because I hate Powder Blue
Powder Blue = Pretty flaming
I hate the color powder blue. It’s terrible. It’s not masculine. It’s flaming. It’s weak. It’s feeble. It is the color of WeakSauce.
Period.
Part Two - I hate UNC because their 15 out of conference games were WEAKSAUCE
Let’s wind back the clock to the start of the season.
If you are a college basketball fan like myself, back in November you noticed that the North Carolina Tar Heels started off this season ranked number one in the nation. Although I think that this in itself was a little inflated, it was the beginning of the season so I forced myself to ignore this. I figured in the long run the games would do the talking. Little did I know that by today, March 5, they would still be back on top…..undeservedly.
So when I first had the opportunity to see our “chart toppers” in action, I was excited. North Carolina versus Davidson was nationally televised and I watched the entire game. I was appalled and offended by the complete abominations that played what they called “basketball” that day. North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson had one assist the entire game and four turnovers.
I thought, “This is the guy that is one of the top five point guards in the league?”
The team as a whole had 19 turnovers. I observed that North Carolina had no concept of a half court offense….or defense. Davidson was encouraged it seemed to shoot uncontested three pointers all night long. Davidson even grabbed the lead with 15 minutes remaining in the second half and held it for seven minutes. Both teams were going basket for basket in a turnover-ridden, sloppy contest. If Dick Vitale walked onto the court and took a dump at half court, nobody would have noticed.
Dump Within the Confines of the Offense Baby!!
I watched as the “All American” Tyler Hansbrough had no field goals in the second half. In fact, 10 of his 14 points came off layups and free throws. North Carolina was winning by one point until Wayne Ellington buried a tough jump shot, putting the Heels ahead three with one minute to play. Not to mention, Davidson didn’t help their cause by missing easy layups down the stretch. North Carolina was able to make free throws in the end and seal the victory. It left a very unsettling feeling in my stomach.
“That is the number one team in the nation?” Jim exclaimed to his roommate Jeremy at the conclusion of the game.
And the Tarheels as a team would look no better since.
Convinced they would lose soon and be eliminated from the top of the rankings, I took interest in their schedule.
North Carolina was slated to play Iona, South Carolina State, Old Dominion, Brigham Young, Ohio State, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Rutgers, Nicholls State, UC Santa Barbara, Nevada, Valparaiso, Kent State, and North Carolina-Asheville for their remaining out of conference games.
At first glance, the schedule looked quite unimpressive. However, I reassured myself, “Well, they got Kentucky and Ohio State in there.” For the heck of it, I decided to look at the schedules of the other top teams in the nation.
In their fifteen out of conference games, Kansas has played:
Arizona, USC, DePaul, Georgia Tech, Boston College
In their fifteen out of conference games, Memphis has played:
In their fifteen out of conference games, UCLA has played:
Maryland, Michigan State, Texas, Michigan
In their fifteen out of conference games, Tennessee has played:
Texas, West Virginia, Xavier, Ohio State
So now looking back at North Carolina schedule, Ohio State and Kentucky doesn’t look so bold anymore does it?
In fact, Carolina’s out of conference schedule was complete WEAKSAUCE and about as impressive as this dude.
Again, Not Very Impressive
Throughout November and December, I am starting to get very angry at North Carolina. I keep checking the rankings and I keep reading that the Tarheels are undefeated! In fact by Mid December, there were a few undefeated teams: Duke, Kansas, Memphis, and North Carolina. The only difference is while North Carolina tears into the likes of South Carolina State, and Nicholls State, the other teams are playing significantly harder teams. In fact, by December 20th the first of the undefeateds would go down. Duke would fall to a decent Pittsburg team by one point in overtime. Two days later, UNC would destroy Santa Barbara.
Part Three- I hate UNC because of their Lazy Offense and Weaksauce Defense
Since watching the Davidson debacle of a basketball game, I also caught the games against Ohio State, Brigham Young, and Kentucky. I am starting to become disgusted by the fact that this team that I’m watching is being praised for being undefeated.
“Well, you have to give them credit…..they haven’t lost yet.”
NO….I DON’T! With the schedule they are playing, of course they haven’t lost yet!
In my mind at that point, the only reason they are undefeated is because they haven’t been challenged! Then I watched the Brigham Young game.
Brigham Young was looking pretty good and was using a good “team offense” concept to take the lead late into the second half. Then with the exception of two foul shots and a dunk, Brigham Young was not heard from again for the final six minutes. The most disgusting part was Lee Cummard missed two wide-open three point attempts in the final three minutes, when Brigham Young was only down by three points. I shouted out in anguish, “Will somebody please make North Carolina pay for not guarding ANYONE!”
And then I got to watch Ohio State.
I watched Ohio State take a lead into the half because North Carolina just plain wasn’t guarding Jon Diebler. I’m not talking about Diebler coming off a screen, I’m referring to Danny Green standing there and watching Diebler launch a third consecutive three pointer in his face because he doesn’t want to burn an extra calorie.
North Carolina's Defense
In fact, the lead would have been bigger if Ohio State would not have insisted that Tyler Hansbrough have two wide-open, uncontested dunks inside of three minutes.
Well, I’m sure you can guess what happened in the second half of the game. Ohio State just plain stops scoring. It’s not like North Carolina played any extra defense. We are talking about a solid time of eleven minutes where the Buckeyes can’t muster up more then a couple foul shots. We are talking about seventeen consecutive missed shots from the field. So needless to say, I was rather disgusted with ESPN and the polls for the continual praise of this Tarheels team which was consistently showing me they were not very good at all.
So next came Kentucky. By this time UNC had finally lost their #1 ranking, which made me feel better. However, Kentucky proved no match for UNC. Kentucky made some big shots thanks to the lack of Tarheel defense and hung around for the first half. I then turned the game off in the second half when the game got out of hand. Danny Green put up twenty points as I was just plain annoyed.
This game was impressive until it took Kentucky five minutes into the second half to put up more then 14 points against Vanderbilt.
After North Carolina had defeated both Kentucky and Ohio State, it seemed like they didn’t even break a sweat for fourteen games. The holidays are over and I am now in full swing hatred of North Carolina. So far they have only shown me that they are lazy and disorganized, the majority of them don’t hustle, and they haven’t played anyone challenging. They are at this point 14-0 hitting the road to play #19 Clemson, which would be the first time they would face a RANKED TEAM all season long so far. Not to mention, they would have LOST to Clemson had Wayne Ellington not buried a three pointer with 0.4 seconds left in overtime. North Carolina’s one true test, and they succeed at the buzzer in overtime? I am disgusted at the sheer IDEA that they are ranked in the same sentence as Memphis and Kansas.
Part Four - I hate UNC because I hate Tyler Hansbrough
Now I know what you are thinking. How can he hate Psycho T? All he has ever done is play with motivation, strength, determination, and heart. He embodies everything you like about sports Jim! Right?
Wrong.
Tyler - America Bows Before You
I hate Tyler Hansbrough because of what he symbolizes. Here we have an undersized center, who gets all of his points by foul shots and hustle points. He has no real post moves or basketball talent. All he can do is get position, draw contact, box out, and out hustle you. If he played for Mississippi State, then we wouldn’t even know who he is, but because he plays for the University of North Carolina Tarheels, apparently he has to be sugar coated enough to be an All American. Are you kidding me? He isn’t dominant. He isn’t a great scorer. He’s a rebounder. He’s a hustler. Words to describe Tyler Hansbrough are the following: decent, hustles, plays smart, tries, works. Yet all I keep hearing are the words: unstoppable, excellent, incredible, dominant, MVP, player of the year. He symbolizes media hype in its entirety. He’s a good person and a good role model, so he is being force fed to us as the greatest player in College Basketball. The irony is he will get absolutely dominated in the pros…if he goes.
Back to our timeline. It is January 16 and UNC is taking on Georgia Tech. I like Georgia Tech at this point and I think they play great team basketball. In fact, they were my December pick to be the first to beat UNC. I had no idea how close to being correct I would be.
Tyler Hansbrough would have 27 points in this game, 13 of which on foul shots and 12 of which would be on layups and dunks. Therefore, 25 of his 27 points in this game would come from foul shots, lay ups, and dunks. In fact, the North Carolina team as a whole would only score on layups and foul shots! Layups, dunks, and foul shots made up 61 of UNC’s 83 total points. I would say this was the mark of a team that had a real good half court offense except if you had watched the game you would see that was not the case. It is UNC’s bush-league cheap fast breaks and referee favored fouls that gave them these points. For example, let’s relive how Georgia Tech lost.
With twenty six seconds remaining in a tie game, Danny Green is put on the stripe on a very weak foul called. He makes one of two free throws. Georgia Tech comes down the court with a chance to win the game as Zach Peacock decides to take matters into his own hands. You got to give him credit, the dude makes a good move and blows by his man en route to the hoop. He is mugged underneath by none other then Tyler Hasnbrough but the whistles are silent. He even gets his own rebound underneath and is mugged again, but the whistles are still silent. The game ends as nine seconds of fouling goes unnoticed. Not one second. Not two seconds. Not even three seconds. We are not talking about the last play of the game. We are talking about NINE SECONDS of fouling.
Why do I hate Tyler Hansbrough? Here is a good example. Since the sports world thinks so highly of him, there is this stubborn refusal to call a foul on “god’s gift to basketball” at the end of the game. Now, I am all for keeping the whistles silent at the end of the game, but Zach Peacock made a good move to get by his man and got fouled to prevent an easy layup! Keeping the whistles silent here shows favoritism. The same favoritism Tyler Hansbrough and his North Carolina Tarheels have gotten all season long undeservedly, and it makes me SICK.
Part Five - I hate UNC because they are OVER RATED
Honestly, nobody likes an over rated team. The term over rated implies favoritism, it just reeks of controversy and lack of fairness. It is most commonly used to describe a person or a team whose talents have been greatly exaggerated by the media to force excitement and popularity on that team. North Carolina is more over rated then Tim Couch holding an HD DvD player. Is Tyler Hansbrough really one of the best college players in basketball? Hell no! But ESPN is going to make him out to be because it makes fans excited. We are talking about a player that gets a lot of rebounds and scores a lot of points, so why not make an argument for him being the best. Likewise, we have a 26-2 basketball team that was undefeated in out of conference basketball. Instead of questioning their infallibility, let’s just compare them to the best college teams that ever played. That’s what the media does, it creates hype. The Tar Heels have put up the numbers, so it’s really easy to surround them with undeserving hype. Why not, let’s compare Tyler Hansbrough to Michael Jordan while we are at it. Disgusting.
Hansbrough is compared to Jordan
What better of a time to discuss how over hyped UNC is then now, as I segway into the Maryland game. Those beautiful University of Maryland Terrapins went into the Dean Smith Center and beat the Tarheels 82-80. Tyler Hansbrough went 6 for 15 from the field. Maryland lead 52-41 at one point midway through the second half. Finally, the world would begin to understand that UNC is not that wonderful right?
Wrong.
North Carolina would put together one solid win against Miami before sleep walking past a garbage Boston College team and an undisciplined Florida State team. It took the media exactly three games to remember why they loved this team so much, who now improved their record to 21-1. Suddenly we forget how 15 of those 21 wins happened. All that matters is how the win column keeps growing. The record starts to build a prestige of its own, and before we knew it, Duke/UNC is upon us.
The University of North Carolina was so over rated at this point, that even without starting point guard Ty Lawson the T.V. announcers are saying that the Heels should win by double digits. Not only are they predicting Duke to lose, but they are predicting Carolina to win by ten points or more? Are you kidding me? In a rivalry of this magnitude I would be shocked if either team won by more then six points.
And I was shocked, because Duke would run them out of Chapel Hill.
UNC got owned by Greg Paulus
North Carolina had twenty turn overs and Tyler Hansbrough looked like he was playing himself. The Heels had no concept of a half court offense, yet again. The only difference between this game and the others is the announcers and analysts were actually making EXCUSES for North Carolina’s abominable performance. They actually had the nerve to say the reason the Tarheels looked so bad on offense was because Ty Lawson didn’t play.
“That’s funny,” I think to myself, “didn’t Ty Lawson play in the other 19 games of the season in which the Tarheels looked EQUALLY pathetic?"
It’s amazing how over hyped the North Carolina Tarheels have become. It got to the point where the hype was so bad, that the team didn’t even have to make up its own excuses. People are making excuses for them. It’s like the nation is brainwashed, and refuses to admit that North Carolina is not infallibe. I can almost feel the hatred ESPN had for the fresh blemish on that pristine 21-1 record. It was nauseating.
Duke was ahead by seven points with a minute left in the half, but Tyler Hansbrough was able to convert to quick layups to narrow the lead to three before buzzer sounded. The game was relatively close throughout the second half, but then the heels defense came into play. Duke started raining the three pointers and then it was game over. A late three pointer by Danny Green would cut the lead to five, but foul shots would win the game for Duke in the end.
So after Duke beat up on North Carolina, justice was finally served. Duke was ranked ahead of North Carolina, and the Heels were ranked as low as #5, where they belonged.
However, the next week Kansas would lose to a very challenging, highly ranked Texas Team and Duke would lose to a decent Miami team. Miami was UNC’s only good win of the season remember. So when the rankings came out on February 18, North Carolina overtook both Duke and Kansas in the rankings, despite each of the teams having two losses. Do you believe that? Is there a better definition of over rated and over hyped? The media push given to the Tar Heels was so out of control, that they would have the same record as Duke and Kansas, yet move UP in the rankings. Even though they had lost to Duke one week earlier, the AP Poll thought that the Heels should be ranked higher then the team that beat them heads up. I for one was disgusted.
And what have the Tar Heels done while Kansas was losing on the road to one of the top teams in the country?
North Carolina was busy needing two overtimes to beat Clemson.
North Carolina found themselves behind 23-9 midway through the first half. North Carolina was getting their butts kicked by Clemson.
The same Clemson who would have beaten them had Wayne Ellington not made a three pointer at the buzzer.
Part Six - I hate UNC because everything seems to go “there way” undeservedly.
North Carolina was getting destroyed by Clemson on February 10, and was down by eleven at the half. North Carolina would even be down by 14 points with seven minutes remaining in the game. The Heels would eventually cut the lead to five late in the second half. Then, all of a sudden Danny Green hits back to back three pointers and it’s a two point game. Quentin Thomas makes a layup with 26 seconds left and next thing you know, UNC has prevailed at the end of the second overtime. Great game, UNC.
Talk about not deserving a game, the very next game UNC would play the Virginia Cavaliers. After playing a completely worthless first half, the Tarheels found themselves down 31-30 at the end of the first half. Then, they inexplicably take an 8-0 run into the locker room and find themselves up 38-31.
The game would be pretty close for the majority of the second half, but the Cavaliers would wear down the steady seven point lead slowly. Then, from out of nowhere, Calvin Baker hits a well timed three and all of a sudden the Cavs are down a bucket with fifty three seconds left to play. North Carolina with an important possession comes up the court and gets it to Tyler Hansbrough. Psycho T once again demonstrates that he has no inside moves, and settles for the turn around baseline jump shot. He proceeds to fire a line drive prayer, that somehow finds the bottom of the net. The shot was so entirely ugly, that the announcers on ESPN say, “I don’t know how that went in." The other announcer said, “it’s like the ball had no rotation.” So yes, a contested ten foot ugly base line PRAYER, scores with 23 seconds left in the game to put Carolina up four.
The next possession was undoubtedly a big one for Virginia, who was forced to call timeout. The play they drew up was obviously for Sean Singletary. Singletary comes off a screen and drops a three pointer on North Carolina with fifteen seconds left, making the score 75-74. I find myself wondering how in the world Sean Singletary was given so much space. It doesn’t matter, it’s a one point game and Virginia has to foul. The foul puts Wayne Ellington on the line. With just five seconds remaining, Ellington proceeds to miss the front end of the bonus foul shot, and nobody is able to get the rebound and the time expires.
North Carolina pulls out a “crapshoot” of a basketball game once again. Keep in mind, each of these wins counts toward their “amazing 2008 season” record.
Granted they did play very well against Virginia Tech, it was these three games that would prompt the AP poll rankings to place them as #3 in the nation. North Carolina was now ranked ahead of both Duke and Kansas, who each had two losses. The only difference was North Carolina should have gotten dominated by Clemson and completely lucked their way to a defeat of Virginia. They could have very easily had two additional losses here, yet the AP poll thinks they are a better team then Duke (who they lost to) and Kansas who lost two tough road games to rival Kansas State and the University of Texas who is currently ranked #9 in the nation. Talk about things going your way.
North Carolina’s season is now coming to a close. After dancing and skipping their way through two easy games versus North Carolina State and Wake Forest, it would be time for the Tar Heels to be challenged once again versus a hopelessly mediocre Boston College team.
On Saturday, March 1st, the Tarheels would take on Boston College. You never really know which Boston College team is going to show up. Boston College opened up the game mercilessly dominating North Carolina, to the point where it was hilarious. Tyreese Rice dropped 34 points on the Tarheels, who again weren’t playing any defense. In fact, their defense was so bad, that Coach Roy Williams benched the starters. UNC was down 54-40 at the half, and they shouldn’t have even been that close. In fact, 17 of the teams 23 total foul shots came in the first half, accounting for nearly HALF of their points. Another interesting point, 7 minutes into the first half, UNC had 12 points, 6 of them coming on foul shots. At this point, Boston College had not even been to the charity stripe. We are not talking about good fouls either. I am referring to terrible possessions, BAILED OUT by wimp fouls. It was nothing short of DISGUSTING.
Then in the second half, everything seemed to “fall into place” for the good ol’ Tarheels.
Suddenly Tyreese Rice, who had 34 in the first half, cannot make a three pointer in the second half. Boston College evidently WENT HOME, because they proceeded to score 24 points in the entire second half. There was a seven minute in span, where Boston College was scoreless. In this cold spell, Boston College’s possessions would look like:
Missed three pointer
Missed Lay up
Two missed foul shots
Turnover
Turnover
Turnover
Turnover
Missed Layup
What the hell is that! Where did you go Boston College! You disappeared off the face of the earth in the second half!
With five minutes left in the game, the Eagles had scored 9 points over the last 12 minutes, while 3 of those 9 points would be off foul shots. So that’s essentially three baskets, in twelve minutes. That is a basket per FOUR MINUTES.
So logically, Boston College lost by ten. Nice work. Isn’t North Carolina lucky that Boston College went home in the second half. Just like Clemson. Just like Ohio State. Isn’t Carolina lucky that teams just stop playing in the second half against them.
Isn’t North Carolina lucky that teams just STINK against them.
Well guess what Tarheels, your luck is going to run out. Maybe not now, maybe not in the ACC tournament, but maybe…
JUST MAYBE…
In the only tournament that matters, the NCAA Tournament.
Book it.
The Weaksauce North Carolina Tarheels will not see the sweet sixteen.
I say this, because I for one, have not been brainwashed.
