I want to set the record straight right up front.
I am not a Boston hater.
My dad is from Quincy, Massachusetts. I grew up supporting the Red Sox and was born with an innate hatred for the city of New York.
But the year 1918 has passed long before I was born, and this summer it will be officially NINETY years later. It is pretty amazing that in the last five years alone, the Red Sox have managed to win two World Series Championships. So I guess all the crying for that long awaited title was validated for Boston, being the starved Championship city that it is.
Well, unless you don’t count the 1970’s where the Celtics won the NBA Finals twice.
Or the 1980’s where they appeared in the finals every single year but one, winning the Finals three times.
Or the span of years between 2001-2005, where the New England Patriots became the second team in NFL History to win three Super Bowls in four years.
Not to mention that almost perfect 18-1 season, where the New York Giants ruined the enjoyment of professional sports for me.
 Championship Deprived
And now here I sit, watching the 2008 NBA Finals, watching the Boston fan base screaming for yet another championship. How do you want me to feel? Do you want me to cheer for you? Do you want my support?
I sat in front of the TV on February 3, screaming 19-0 and waving my Patriots flag all over New Jersey. I prayed for Tom Brady to throw five touchdowns. You had my support! I wanted that Super Bowl win borderline more then I wanted my own team to win the Super Bowl. Well, maybe not that much….but PRETTY DAMN CLOSE.
And let me remind you Boston loyalists, that while your Red Sox were busy winning their second championship in five years, the New England Patriots were already halfway through the first perfect season since the 1972 Dolphins.
But its okay Boston, I am glad you won the NBA finals. I was still there next to you cheering. You see, I hate the Lakers. Kobe Bryant was part of a team that robbed me of my one shot at a basketball championship. But that’s not important, what’s important is the Boston Celtics winning their 17th title.
I’m sorry for being a little forward, but I just have to ask.
Were you all kneeling in front of your beds the other night, praying for this Championship?
How old are you anyway? Are you 10?
Well if you are a 10 year old Boston sports fan, then in your life time you have watched your team win five titles.
When I was ten I cried as I watched Joe Carter’s homerun soar over the center field fence.
 Little Frontrunner
Maybe you are 25 like me. Then your childhood was largely devoted to a man named Larry Bird. When you were a baby, your town won two basketball titles. You then went on a little bit of a hiatus until your football Super Bowl. You had that appearance in 1997, but you lost to the Packers. It doesn’t matter though. You probably complained and moaned until your Patriots won three titles in four years. Don’t forget those two long awaited Red Sox Championships. That gives you a grand total of seven titles in your lifetime before this one. Poor you.
I am sincerely glad you got this eighth title though. I really am. It’s been a full twelve years since your last Basketball Championship. I mean, Super Bowls and World Series are getting old. Those people in Boston that are only basketball fans are deprived!
I guess I have no right to complain. I have gone twenty-five years of my life without a title. The Sixers won when I was nine months old, so I guess that is not completely true. I have watched Mitch Williams give up a bomb in Toronto, I have watched Donovan McNabb throw a football to Ronde Barber, I have watched Robert Horry hit a three in the final minute, and I have watched Sergei Fedorov have a four point night.
But yeah, I am glad you won last night. Good job Boston. Congratulations.
